Earl Johnson
Knoxville, Tennessee, United States
Self-taught. Born in Cleveland, MS; now in Knoxville, TN. Knoxville's small town atmosphere but big city sites and places sparked the creative flame again that I thought was lost. So now I draw at least one finished drawing a week, whatever inspires me that day. I use a variety of media: graphite and colored pencils, charcoal, pen, and chalk. AVAILABLE FOR COMMISSIONS AND REQUESTS. And if it's not too much trouble, please click on some of my sponsors on this page, k? "Impatience is the enemy of good drawing..."

It's Monday....(sigh)

Well it's Monday again.  Hooray, right.  Woke up this morning and my tire was going flat...

Elaine really loved the commission piece I did for her and so did her mom.  You always get people especially friends that say, "Where's my drawing?" when they see the commission you did for someone else.  I always tell them, "Let's set up a time for a pose you could do or get me a picture you want me to start with."  But some of my friends never do that; I think they just like saying that at the time...LOL!  But seriously, I have a couple of anniversary pieces in the works for the future and part 2 to Worlds Away coming up next year, so it's a busy time.

Elaine and K-9

This is a commission piece I did for my friend, Elaine. This is her as a baby and characters from her favorite show, Doctor Who.

Update status on posting new drawings!

Finishing up on two portrait commissions and will post one today here.  I was requested by a teacher from my old elementary school to send her a print of Dark Wonderland for her son.  I like that piece too!  Sometimes I just like to let my imagination of the chain!  Who knows what'll show up on the paper???  But whatever it will be, I'll put it here for your enjoyment and amusement!! LOL!

Drawing: "Lost in Thought"

I know I just said I would post "soon".  But I scanned this at work.  This beauty is standing on a pier "lost in thought" as it were.

UPDATE COMING SOON!

I will post some new drawings soon.  We just got settled moving in and got the internet connected.  I will say this again, "I HATE MOVING!" There, it's outta my system.  I have finished one drawing and having started on another, so expect a big update soon!

Finished Moving!

Finally we're finished moving into our new townhouse and unpacking things.  I really hate moving.  Let's pause for a second to let that last sentence sink in.... Okay, now that everything is settling, I will be posting new drawings here in the next few days.  Just need time for a short nap...ZZZZZ

Waiting Marachi

Right now I'm in the middle of moving and if that's not enough, a new project! Nothing to post of it yet, but while my sons and I were waiting for my wife to come out of the store, they ask me to draw something, and I drew this in their tablet...I guess I'll call it Waiting Marachi.

These days life is so stressful ; you have to make a conscious effort to "de-stress".  A vacation, recreation, or hobbies are very helpful.  For me, of course it's drawing.  My wife acts as my editor.   She sees all my works before anyone else.  Art, itself, in any form whether it's performing arts or visual arts relaxes the mind and the heart.  Add Bible principles in there and stress goes out the window for a while.  De-stress People!

Tender Moment, Sarina and Jamir

Here's the piece I did for my friend who's mom has cancer. This is Sarina and her son, Jamir.

Pharoah's Folly

Here's Pharaoh, highly upset that the Israelites are getting away across the Red Sea. I guess he figured if they can do it so could the Egyptians. Oh! Bad decision, buddy!

More head studies

Always practice. Always. I always wondered how Bridgeman with his Constructive Anatomy taught a realist like Norman Rockwell. Well I think I figured out the way. Also the book Drawing The Head from Walter Foster Products with it's Andrew Loomis illustrations,  helped too.

New Projects...

Currently I'm working on a hush, hush webtoon and a portrait for a friend who's mom has cancer.  That last one is very personal for me.  Life is so tough nowadays for everyone.  Art for me is just one means of relaxing the mind and the heart.

"Beat Down, but Still Standing"

Changed the name a little, but still the same meaning:  "I get knocked down, but I get up again!  "Tubthumpin".  We all are struggling now, so fight this recession and get back in there!!!

Summer Days!!!

The days are starting to get hot around here in East Tennessee!  The kids are out of school and vacation time is looming near!  This recession kinda beats up on you every time you hear bad news.   Factory closing, job loss, gas prices increase, etc.  The next piece I'm uploading is called just that, "Beat up, But still standing!"  Inspired by Rocky, but motivated by all the strong willed people out there who've lost there house, car, lifestyle, but refuse to give up!

I was watching a show on HDTV about people find apartments and this woman while deciding to consider this place stood on one corner of the rooftop.  I tried to remember all I could about the moment.  The scene only lasted a minute.
